Abstract

This study is an effort to see the meeting point between hadiths al-walūd and family planning program of government to press population birthrate. The hadith text (al-walūd) which explicitly advocates reproducing offspring is contrary to the government’s program to control population birthrate. Departing from here, comprehensive reading should be applied. Therefore, this paper will use double movement Fazlur Rahman as basis thinking to peruse the whole meaning of the hadith, both its historical side and contemporary relevance. Based on the application of the theory, it is found that historical meaning of these hadiths is the way of the prophet’s da’wah to forbid killing girls and an effort to inculcate egalitarianism in the society who live in patriarchal culture. Whereas the main message (concept of morality) is an intruction to cherish every human life. Hence, the contraditction between the hadith and family planning program can not be justified. Both of them even strive to create a good social order.
