Abstract

The Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) plays an important role in safeguarding democracy based on Pancasila and in maintaining contemporary Indonesian Sunni orthodoxy. This confidence as a semi-official and representative institution often encourages people to apply MUI’s fatwa at the local, even national level, triggering conflicts between pros and cons against groups that are considered heretical and deviant. This article aims to analyze the role of MUI South Sulawesi in maintaining Sunni orthodoxy, as well as the development of Islamization of Bugis-Makassar society in South Sulawesi, especially in responding to the local cultural ritual of Maccera tasi’ by the maritime community which is considered deviant and leads to shirk and bid’ah practices. Thus, Pancasila as a guiding idea that can be an alternative solution in viewing the plurality of the Indonesian nation.
