Abstract

The literacy skills of junior high school students require continuous improvement to meet the demands of 21st-century learning and assessments that emphasize the ability to understand, analyze, and evaluate information. Variations in students’ literacy competencies and the limited availability of instructional materials capable of accommodating individual learning needs remain significant challenges in literacy education. This study aimed to analyze the needs for designing an adaptive learning model embedded in a big data-integrated interactive e-module to support literacy acceleration among junior high school students. A descriptive quantitative approach employing a survey method was utilized. The participants consisted of five teachers and twenty-eight students from junior high schools in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Data were collected through teacher and student needs-analysis questionnaires covering students’ literacy conditions, literacy learning practices, technology utilization, the need for interactive e-modules, adaptive learning features, learning analytics, and the integration of local cultural contexts. The collected data were analyzed descriptively using percentage statistics. The findings revealed that 95.0% of teacher responses and 92.6% of student responses fell into the “agree” and “strongly agree” categories regarding the necessity of developing an adaptive learning model within a big data-integrated interactive e-module. Both teachers and students expressed the need for engaging and interactive digital learning materials capable of adjusting content and exercises according to students’ abilities and learning pace. In addition, they emphasized the importance of continuous feedback and learning analytics to monitor learning progress. These findings indicate a strong need for the development of a big data-integrated adaptive learning model as an innovative instructional solution to enhance literacy learning and accelerate literacy achievement among junior high school students in South Kalimantan.
