Developing Arabic Language Proficiency through the Socio-Cultural Approach in Vygotsky’s Perspective (An Applied Methodology Study at Madrasah Mu’alimin Mu’alimat Bahrul ‘Ulum Jombang)

Abstract

This research aims to examine how the sociocultural approach can be applied in light of Vygotsky’s theory to develop Arabic language proficiency at Bahrul Ulum Teacher Training School. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study explores the implementation of a curriculum that emphasizes social interaction, the use of language in real-life contexts, and the teacher’s role as a mediator in learning through what is known as scaffolding. The findings show that key principles of Vygotsky’s theory, such as the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and scaffolding, are effective in enhancing students’ Arabic language skills, particularly through collaborative activities, group discussions, and contextual teaching. Moreover, an educational environment enriched with cultural and religious values contributes to strengthening the internalization of the language. The study recommends integrating the sociocultural approach more systematically into the design of Arabic language instruction in order to improve the relevance and effectiveness of the curriculum in building students’ linguistic and communicative competence.
