The idea of writing tafsir Salman began when in mid-2010 the chairman of the Salman ITB Mosque Trustees Foundation (YPM) asked several persons (who eventually became the Salman tafsir writing team) to compile a tafsir of the Qur'an and the tafsir contains interpretation seen from the point of view of modern sciences (science) and classical tafsir sciences. Tafsir Salman is a scientific interpretation. Tafsir ilmi is a process of interpreting the Qur'an that uses scientific theories to explain the Quran verses. Or, a style of interpretations intended to explore scientific theories and philosophical thoughts from the Quran verses. The preparation of Salman's tafsir is to fulfill the criticism of scientific interpretations that have been written before because the writing of scientific interpretations today is seen as if Muslim scientists are looking for the truths of modern science in the Qur'an to show the superiority of Islam. The selection of Juz Amma as the suras that are commented because Juz Amma is one of the two juz in which the majority of the suras were revealed at the beginning of the prophetic period in Mecca or early Makiyyah. The early Makiyyah surahs contain the foundations of Islam, namely creed and morals, not yet concerning law and sharia.
