Epistemology of the Interpretation of Quraish Shihab, Hamka and Hussein Muhammad concerning the Verses about Homosexuality

Abstract

Homosexuality is a real event that occurs in the community. The issue of homosexuality has caused a lot of conflict among Indonesian scholars. Quraysh Shihab and Hamka are two figures of commentary scholars who do not agree with the existence of homosexuality, and they are both in a different era when interpreting the Qur'an. Despite having similarities in the results of interpretations of homosexuality that are associated with the story of the people of Prophet Lut, they have different epistemological structures. Unlike Husein Muhammad, a male feminist figure who is sensitive to gender issues. This research is qualitative research with primary sources in the form of interpretations from Quraysh Shihab, Hamka and Husein Muhammad on the issue of homosexuality. The data collection technique in this study was carried out by library study, which directly examined the results of the interpretations of Quraysh Shihab, Hamka and Husein Muhammad. This study uses epistemological theory in general and epistemology initiated by Abid Aljabiri and the epistemological typology of the interpretation of the three interpreters. The results of this study indicate that the sources of Quraysh Shihab and Hamka's interpretations both come from the text, even though they come from different eras but they have the same source of interpretation. Whereas Husein Muhammad was oriented to the source of interpretation of Ra'yi with the deductive method or in the study of interpretations called thematic methods. The results of the interpretation of Quraysh Shihab and Hamka show that the actions of the people of Prophet Lut are similar to homosexuals that occur today, while Husein Muhammad said that homosexuals are different from liwath. Liwath in the sense of Hussein Muhammad is having sexual intercourse through the anus, and this can also be done by heterosexuals.
