Abstract

Arabic language learning in Indonesia remains centred on traditional methods that prioritize in language structure (grammar-based) rather than real communication ability. The implementation of the communicative approach in this study aims to enhance oral communication skills. This study is an in-depth investigation into the implementation of the communicative approach in a two-year course credits program at Model Zainul Hasan Genggong Senior High School. This research distinguishes itself by revealing the constraints and opportunities of implementing this approach within an intensive timeframe, which has not been explicitly discussed in previous research. This study also evaluates the difference of student achievement in a competitive learning environment with a heavy academic workload. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and document analysis. Research findings indicates that the communicative approach is capable of driving improvement in students' Arabic speaking abilities, but time constraints and imbalances in educational facilities pose a major obstacle to the overall learning process. This study provides recommendations for improving the communicative approach in two-year course credits program through adaptive pedagogical innovations that are more suitable for dynamic educational situations.
